Many non botanists recognise the name of this flower. Generally seen in the more rural areas of Edinburgh but a good place to see them is the Hermitage of Braid Park. In partially shaded places and sometimes in full sun. It can tolerate quite dry soils. One of my personal favourites. A bit unusual for a wildflower, it is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers are on separate plants, so at least two plants of opposite gender are required to produce seed. Red campion flowers from june to august. A short lived perrenial. A close relative is the White Campion, Silene Latifolia, which is less commonly seen. Often produces hybrids. Flowers from may to august, but often start earlier and finishes when the first frosts come.
